Video Spotlight: Junk

When one thinks of Canadian rappers with a household name, some would say the list is short. Artists like Drake, Classified, Madchild or even Merkules might come to mind, but this year there’s an artist making his way to the top of that list. His name is Junk. His latest release “Fuck the Rules” is a textbook example of his speed and talent with lyricism. Produced by Imperetiv with visuals from Self Hired, the video is faithfully a classic hip-hop mainstay: the summer BBQ. Amidst shots of friends and fam, Junk delegates bars atop playground jungle gyms and ball-court hoops with panache. For those wishing to feel free from concern, the subject matter of the song makes the track easily relatable as a summer anthem. And let’s face it- what better way to open a video than by rolling up in a ‘67 Cutlass with the top down. See the video below for yourself.

Junk has already left a clear high mark for other Canadian rappers, not only as a four-time winner of Vancouver’s Rent Money freestyle events but also as Canada’s national champion of the international End of the Weak competition in 2011. With numerous releases from his group Northwest Division, his debut album “I.A.N.” with Stealthbomb records and the solid follow-up sophomore release “Stupid and Ugly”, Junk has had very little downtime since signing to the label. Continually touring Canada in addition to a seven country tour with Snak the Ripper in Europe in 2017, just recounting his accomplishments in the last year results in a run-on sentence. While working on this article I asked Junk what was next, studio time or more touring and he responded by simply saying: “Both”. He is currently wrapping up a tour with Cali legend Locksmith and is soon to announce the release of an upcoming album entitled “Audio Heroin”. Junk is steadily building a foundation for his future as one Canada’s hardest working recording artists. I strongly suggest collecting his catalog of work and keeping a keen eye on his future projects. -MwH.
